Discover the fascinating history of the beautiful New Theatre Royal from 1856 to the present day and get a chance to see the secrets of a Phipps/Matcham Theatre in operation.
The theatre is an architectural gem that represents the work of two renowned 19th Century theatre architects: Charles Phipps and Frank Matcham. Learn about the famous faces that have appeared over the years, the decline and subsequent rebuild of the theatre, and the secrets that lie beyond the doors.
You'll start your tour with an exclusive talk from a member of The Frank Matcham Society who will be visiting especially for Heritage Open Days. You will then be guided through the theatre on a historic journey with the tour guide to see parts of the theatre not usually visited by the public.
These tours have been specially designed to be accessible for all, using lifts rather than stairs, to allow even those using wheelchairs access to areas not usually seen by the general public.
There will be three tours available on Saturday 7 September: 10am, 12pm and 2pm. Each will last for approximately one hour.
Pre-booking is required. The tours are free but you must pre-book your place as spaces are limited.
Free, but pre-booking required.
