Wycombe
Great Missenden is a large and attractive Buckinghamshire village nestled in the Misbourne Valley within the Chiltern Hills National Landscape. Its narrow, winding High Street is lined with historic half-timbered and Georgian houses, independent shops, traditional inns and the beautiful 14th century parish church of St Peter and St Paul.
Author Roald Dahl lived at Great Missenden for 36 years and wrote many of his best-loved children's books here including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits and more.
The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre is located in the High Street. The Museum, aimed at 6 to 12 year olds, features three interactive galleries. Boy gallery looks at Roald Dahl's school days while Solo gallery houses his original Writing Hut, whilst the story centre aims at inspiring visitors creativity.
Visitors can also see Roald Dahl's grave in the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul's Church. Look out for the quote from The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me and the giant BFG footprints leading to his final resting place.
Great Missenden is also home to Missenden Abbey, a historic former Augustinian abbey. While currently closed for redevelopment, its grounds remain an important part of the village's heritage.
For those who enjoy the outdoors, the River Misbourne, one of England's rare chalk streams, begins at Mobwell Pond opposite the Black Horse pub in Great Missenden and winds through the Chilterns for 17 miles (27 km) before joining the River Colne at Denham Country Park.
