Tudor historian and writer Dr Phil Roberts tells the fascinating story of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, his rise to power under Henry VIII and his drastic fall from grace leading to accusations of treason after failing to secure King Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon.
Wolsey, born into a family of successful, small businessmen who could trace their origins to Anglo-Saxon times, was ambitious and capable and quickly rose to power. Serving first under Henry VII, and then his son Henry VIII, Wolsey was Lord Chancellor of England by 1520 and the King's right-hand man. Though he reached toppling heights of success, these were quickly snuffed out by accusations of treason which led to the cardinal's spectacular fall from power.
