Sandwich Tourist Information Centre

Step back in time and explore one of the original Cinque Ports which can lay claim to being one of the most historic towns in the country.Sandwich's traditions have remained unchanged throughout the centuries – they still ring the curfew bell from St Peter’s church at 8pm every evening!

Why not retrace some of history's more famous visitor steps - King Charles II drank outside the Bell Hotel and Queen Elizabeth I visited in 1573. Wander through the unspoilt, medieval streets, where there are more half timbered houses than any other street in England.

The historic town trail follows a quiet circular walk, much of it running alongside the River Stour. There are a number of historical pubs along the walk to enjoy a drink or a Sandwich! The 4th Earl of Sandwich is reputed to have asked for meat to be served between 2 slices of bread to avoid interupting his gambling!

You can enjoy the town from a river boat, which goes up the River Stour and take's in some seal spotting. At the historic Guildhall you can discover the intact 400 year old court room and great antiquities such as the ‘Moot Horn’ which was used to summon the people of Sandwich to hear important announcements.
