About

The ruins of the Roman fort Rutupiae, which was the main landing place for the Roman invasion of AD43 and later an important supply base. It was first fortified in the 3rdC by triple defences around a triumphal arch and then by massive, surviving walls of a Saxon shore fort built cAD276. There is also a site museum.
