Antarctic Season 2024: "Those who are dependent on us": the Family Networks behind Scott's Terra Nova expedition, 1910-1913

About

Many have heard of Captain Scott's 'Race to the South Pole', and the tragic deaths of the British Polar Party. However, this expedition's story does not begin with the ship's departure for the Antarctic; nor does it end with a tent pitched just a few miles short of One Ton Depot. This talk will explore the experiences of those 'left behind' by the expedition, and the evolving social networks that developed between the families, friends, and colleagues of its members.
Deborah Wood is a second year PhD student at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge. Her research looks at the emotional histories of the families of early 20th Century Antarctic explorers who died in the course of their expeditions, and the unique role that these families played in shaping and preserving their loved ones' legacies.
