About
The Chestnuts is an outstanding, traditional, yet chic, Cotswold cottage the main part of which dates back to the 1850s. It has many original features including a curved stone stairway, beamed ceilings and a large inglenook fireplace with original bread oven. The cottage has recently been sympathetically extended and today the property comprises four bedrooms (two of them Masters), two lounges, two luxury bathrooms and a separate spa style shower room and downstairs toilet. All the rooms are interior designed in soothing neutral colours with original art works and artefacts.
The cottage has every modern comfort which will make your stay totally relaxing; the fully fitted kitchen has a cooker, hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge and freezer. It is equipped for the gourmet chef with all the utensils, cookery books and cooking equipment you should need, as well as the finest wine glasses, white bone china place settings and a coffee espresso/cappuccino machine.
There are televisions in both lounges and in each bedroom, together with CD, DVD and Bose iPod docking station facilities. There is a small library of hand-picked books, information guides, maps etc, as well as games for all ages. Free wireless internet keeps you fully connected (just bring your lap top).
The four double bedrooms upstairs, sleep up to eight guests. We also have a cot and high chair which we are happy to provide free of charge.
Set in the very heart of Shilton, the secluded garden of The Chestnuts has one of the best positions in the village.
The garden is a very good size and has the added benefit of tremendous views over the adjoining meadow towards the ford and the river Shil. This ancient meadow is full of kingcups and cow parsley in the summer and is periodically grazed by sheep or horses.
There are numerous places to sit and dine in the garden and outside lights have been placed throughout for your enhanced enjoyment. However, we suggest that you stay out in the garden in the dark; one of the joys of Shilton is its night sky. The relative lack of light pollution in this area can lead to some spectacular starry nights. The trees on the river bank are also home to many birds and you can often hear owls hooting to one another.
There is parking for one car on site and for many more on the road outside the cottage.
The cottage is well positioned to access all the major tourist attractions of the region and historic Burford Town is just a five minute drive. The Cotswold wildlife park is equally just a short drive away and is great fun for all the family.
We have some of the best foodie pubs close by, including The Rose and Crown in the village.
