About

This gently sloping pebble beach is located at just a short walk 15 minute from Folkestone town centre. For something a little different, take the walk from the town centre down the zig zag path - this scenic but steep walk down to the Lower Leas, will take you through artificial grottoes that were built at the end of the First World War.

Opposite the Lower Leas Coastal Park, it is great place to go for swim, sunbathe or enjoy picnic - but beach shoes are advised.

The beach is not covered at high tide and there is no lifeguard on duty.

Coffee, snacks, sandwiches and ice creams are all available nearby and barbecues are allowed on the beach.

Toilets are available at Lower Leas Coastal Park.

  • Near the Mermaid Cafe: Public toilets are situated slightly back from the promenade, behind the cafe.
  • Near the Zig Zag Path: A new solar-powered toilet block, which includes a disabled-access unit and a commercial kiosk, is located at the foot of the Zig Zag Path.

Why is mermaid beach called this?

It is due to the fish tail formation of rocks with form part of the sea defences for this part of the Kent coast.

Are dogs welcome on Mermaid Beach in Kent?
