West Dean College of Arts and Conservation

West Dean College is internationally recognised for conservation and creative arts. It has one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public in England. A unique place, to study visit or stay, it is a centre of excellence, creativity and tranquillity. Underpinning it all is the vision of founder and Surrealist patron Edward James, connecting today’s students with a rich heritage of arts, craft and creative possibility.

Degree, Diploma and MA study

Our conservation and visual arts programmes are validated by the University of Sussex. You can expect a rich learning experience that will equip you with advanced practical skills. Our low student-to-staff ratio (average 8:1) means there is a great degree of individual tuition. West Dean College alumni are amongst the leading practitioners in their field.

Art and Craft Short Courses

Learn new skills or nurture existing talents and choose from over 700 engaging subjects, from beginner to advanced, one day to week-long. Take advantage of our fully equipped workshops and studios, and stay overnight in residential accommodation. The historic setting and award-winning West Dean Gardens provide an inspiring environment. First-time students can collect a 10% discount on phone bookings - call 01243 818300.

West Dean Arts and Craft Festival, 2-4 June 2017

An outstanding showcase of arts and craft activities; taking our former Design and Craft Fair (which attracted 5,000 visitors last year) to an exciting new level. From the theatre of live arts and craft demonstrations, to hands-on taster workshops and shopping from 120 quality makers and designers, there is plenty to see and do. You will also have a rare chance to see inside the historic West Dean House and discover works from the Edward James Collection. Music, local food and drink, and free entry to award-winning West Dean Gardens complete this unique event.

Other annual events include music concerts, student exhibitions and artists’ talks.
