Nestled at the foot of the South Downs just 6 miles north of Chichester, West Dean Gardens is one of the greatest restored English gardens open to the public today.

Escape to the glorious gardens and parkland to explore a wide range of features including the 13 Victorian Glasshouses housing orchids, fuchsias, figs, vines, melons and chillies. See the Walled Kitchen Garden, 300 foot-long Edwardian Pergola, the naturalistic Spring Garden, the award-winning Sunken Garden and the orchards. The circular 2½ mile arboretum walk set in 50 acres of beautiful parkland offers spectacular panoramic views of the South Downs.

Visitors can enjoy a freshly prepared lunch or afternoon tea in the Gardens Restaurant and breakfast at weekends/Bank Holidays. Browse the Gardens Shop for seasonal unique gifts and plants, it’s well worth a regular visit.

West Dean Gardens holds events throughout the year including Mother’s Day, Easter Trail, Halloween, Visit Father Christmas and the highly popular 3-day Chilli Fiesta (10-12 August 2018), a family-friendly annual summer festival with a full programme of live music, food and entertainment. Many people camp for the weekend in the spectacular grounds of the Estate in the heart of the South Downs National Park.

Available as a venue for wedding receptions for up to 200 guests.

Public Transport Directions

If you are travelling by bus, from either Chichester or Midhurst direction, please note the number 60 bus stops very close to the West Dean Gardens entrance. However the stop is not marked on the stagecoach timetable or on their website. Therefore, if travelling from Midhurst it is the stop just after the West Dean Gardens entrance, and if travelling from Chichester it is the stop after The Dean Inn, in West Dean village. Visitors may enter the Gardens via the nearby pedestrian gate. Direct train services to Chichester are available from London Victoria. Connecting buses (Stagecoach number 60) are available from the bus station (adjacent to the train station), alternatively a taxi rank is situated outside the station. It is a 10-15 minute journey to West Dean Gardens.
