Bishopstone Village, East Sussex

About

Bishopstone village nestles in the downs to the west of Seaford. It was once on the banks of the River Ouse before the great storm of 1579 changed the river's course. Bishopstone was once the site of the Duke of Newcastle's hunting lodge and was visited by royalty and gentry in the 18th century.

Today the pretty cottages and Saxon church are grouped around the green (known locally as the Egg), and there is an elegant manor house. The newer part of Bishopstone is on the other side of the main road. A local station on the line between Seaford and Lewes serves the village and the holiday caravan site next door.
