The Ocean Race Europe comes to Portsmouth in 2025

About

The Ocean Race Europe, an offshore sailing race for the foiling IMOCA class, will include Portsmouth among its six stopovers in 2025.

Part of the iconic Ocean Race - first held in 1973 with Portsmouth as its original start and finish port - the event combines sport with sustainability through its Racing with Purpose programme, focused on ocean literacy, science, and advocacy.

The race begins on Sunday 10 August 2025 in Kiel, Germany, with mixed male and female crews sailing through the Baltic and North Seas, arriving in Portsmouth around 14 August.

While in Portsmouth, the Ocean Live Park at Gunwharf Quays will offer family-friendly and educational ocean health activities, alongside displays celebrating the sailors’ achievements. The race’s second leg will start on Sunday 17 August.

British sailors competing in the race include Abby Ehler (Allagrande Mapei Racing), Alan Roberts (Team Holcim - PRB), Brian Thompson (Canada Ocean Racing - Be Water Positive), Jack Bouttell (Biotherm), Pip Hare (Canada Ocean Racing - Be Water Positive), Sam Goodchild (Biotherm) and Will Harris (Team Malizia).

Portsmouth has a longstanding tradition of hosting major sailing events, including the earliest editions of the Whitbread Round the World Race. The city’s maritime heritage and commitment to ocean conservation align closely with the values of The Ocean Race Europe.
