A particularly creepy crawly

About

Step into a world of clicks, calls and curious creatures as we explore the sounds of the sea. Long before modern technology, sailors relied on careful listening to understand weather conditions, spot wildlife and stay safe at sea. Today, sound remains vital for navigation, communication and exploring what lies beneath the waves.

In this interactive, family-friendly session, visitors will meet a range of fascinating animals and discover how their bodies and behaviours are linked to the sounds they make. From familiar noises such as a seagull's call or a dolphin's click, to trickier sounds like a crab scuttling across the seabed or a sea lion's grunt, children and adults alike will be encouraged to listen closely, make guesses and uncover surprising connections. Hearing the sharp snip of a crab's claws before meeting another creature with powerful pincers helps bring these mysterious sounds to life in an engaging and memorable way.

During SEND sessions and timed shows, animals will be introduced one at a time and gently circulated, allowing everyone the opportunity to get a closer look and, if they wish, handle them safely. This particular session needs to be booked in advance of your visit.

This welcoming, interactive experience brings together ocean life, sound and the Royal Navy's long relationship with the sea. By combining real animals, listening skills and maritime history, the session offers a fun and accessible way for families to connect with the wonders of the ocean.

This event is free with a valid museum ticket, but this particular session needs to be booked in advance of your visit.
