The Mary Rose Museum this summer we invite you to get 'Hands on with history' with this fun, historically inspired craft activity.
Imagine everyday life in Tudor times, very few people bathed, things could certainly get a bit pongy! Pomanders were used to help mask unpleasant smells, in fact we even found one aboard The Mary Rose.
Tudor pomanders would be filled with pleasant smelling things such as dried petals and herbs. Imagine being onboard the ship, over 500 men and boys living and working in very close confinements, pomanders would be held to the nose to help cover the smell of something a bit stinky!
Get crafty and create your very own pomander bag using historically inspired ingredients.
Discover the apothecary skills our ship's surgeon would have had, and what organic ingredients would have been used to treat sicknesses and wounds aboard the ship.
