Get ready for a new adventure!
This British Science Week, join Dave Johnston from the University of Southampton Biomedical Imaging Unit, and colleagues from other University imaging facilities for a screening of the cult 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage in which a group of scientists and a midget submarine are miniaturised and injected into the body of a terminally ill scientist.
In a strictly time-limited mission (the miniaturisation is only temporary), they must navigate into the brain to locate and destroy the blood clot that is killing him and then return to their extraction point.
The multi award-winning film (including 2 OSCAR wins and 3 other nominations) was considered ground breaking for its special effects and for its portrayal of the inside of the human body. The story was later novelised by Isaac Asimov.
After the screening, there will be time to will discuss the accuracy with which the body is represented in the film and explore some of the tools which are in use today to image biological samples.
