Craft and Skills of the Iron Age

About

Travel back over 2,000 years and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of Iron Age Britain at our Living History Iron Age Experience! Discover what life was really like in an ancient tribal village, where families lived together in hand-built roundhouses, warmed by crackling hearth fires and thatched against the wind.

See and feel the clothing made from hand-spun wool and woven fabrics, dyed with natural plant colours. Watch as skilled craftspeople demonstrate the art of rope-making from plant fibres, the delicate shaping of amber into stunning jewellery, and the ancient secrets of flint knapping used to create tools and weapons.

Learn the fascinating process of turning animal hides into durable leather through traditional tanning methods. See the techniques of Iron Age cooking—cheese and butter churned by hand, bread baked on hot stones, and hearty meals cooked over open fires using ingredients foraged and grown by the tribe. Learn how Iron Age people stored food, smoked meat, and prepared for harsh winters.

Discover how tribes trained to defend their homes against rival clans—and even the Roman invaders.

Perfect for families, history lovers, and curious minds of all ages—join us for a full-sensory journey into the Iron Age, and leave with a newfound respect for the ingenuity, resilience, and vibrant culture of our ancient ancestors.
