Music has always played a vital role in life at sea, from signalling orders across a busy deck to lifting morale during long voyages. In Sounds of the Sea, Southern Music Project teams up with the Royal Marines Band Service Cadets to bring these traditions to life through an exciting, hands-on pop-up orchestra experience at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
Across the day, families can meet young cadet musicians and professional performers, explore a range of instruments, and learn how different sounds travel across open water. Visitors will be invited to try instruments for themselves, discovering how breath, movement and rhythm create powerful sounds that once carried across ships, harbours and fleets.
At set moments, the musicians will perform together, showcasing music inspired by naval life. From ceremonial marches and bold brass calls to pieces that reflect the movement and mood of the sea. These performances highlight teamwork, discipline and creativity, values shared by both musicians and the Royal Navy.
This event is free with a valid museum ticket.
