Explore Rocque's London Map at Chawton

About

Join historian, London expert, and English Heritage veteran Steven Brindle to explore one of Chawton's most unique treasures: our 1746 map of London created by surveyor John Rocque. The remarkably detailed map, printed in 26 sheets, decorates an 8-panel screen in Chawton's tapestry gallery and is the topic of a new book, London in the 18th Century. (Copies will be available for purchase on the evening.) There are only a handful of examples in the world of the map mounted as a complete set. Guests will gather in the great hall for a glass of wine or a soft drink and nibbles while Steven Brindle explains why this treasure is so important. You'll then have the opportunity to go upstairs to take a close look at the map, with Steven there to answer your questions.

Tickets for drinks and the talk: £15
