Westgate Museum

Winchester's Tudor and Stuart past is revealed in this beautifully refurbished listed monument, the last of the main medieval gates into the city.

A debtors' prison for 150 years, original prisoners' graffiti still covers the walls. The museum houses Tudor and Stuart artefacts, including a unique and internationally significant collection of weights and measures and a Tudor ceiling commissioned for the marriage of Mary I and Philip of Spain from Winchester College.

Younger visitors can try on a suit of armour or make an authentic brass rubbing, and there are breathtaking views of Winchester from the museum roof.

The Grade-1 listed building is not wheelchair accessible due to its age and there is a considerably steep staircase from the street entrance. Guide dogs are permitted and there is a hearing loop.

Admission charges apply, tickets can be pre-booked via the Hampshire Cultural Trust website.
