Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium

About

Winchester Science Centre is more than a day out. It’s a chance to spark your children’s curiosity in science which could lead them on an exciting journey for life! Situated in the stunning South Downs National Park, this exciting family destination is the South of England’s hands-on, interactive science and technology centre with the largest standalone planetarium in the UK.

Immersive Exhibits

Feel your senses come alive as you journey through the sights and sounds of an exciting new interactive sound, hearing and vibration experience. Venture into an enormous 10m long guitar, climb inside a giant ear, try your hand at British Sign Language and even join the rescue mission to save Humphrey the Humpback Whale.

And don’t miss out on blasting off on an epic interactive mission through the Solar System in Explorer:Space. Come and discover an out-of-this-world interactive space zone and be inspired to become the next generation of space engineers and astronauts. Explore everything from robots and coding to black holes and human space flight.

Spectacular Live Science

Take a seat and watch as science comes to life during the Science Centre’s free live show. Experience exciting demonstrations, explosive wow moments and fun audience participation. Show themes change regularly so make sure you reserve your space each time you visit. And get set for more explosive live science on a massive scale! Look out for fire, ice and loads of exciting science experiments in Science LIVE, taking place right on the exhibition floor throughout the day.

UK’s Largest Standalone Planetarium

Sit back and relax with a truly unforgettable experience in the UK’s largest standalone Planetarium. The 360° screen will put you right in the action as you fly through the Solar System and discover more about the stars, constellations and planets. With shows created for younger audiences, families and those with sensory sensitivities, this is not to be missed.

Adventures in Nature

Let nature inspire you in the indoor/outdoor experimentation zone, Bio:Space, and the exciting outdoor adventure play area. Have a go at challenges themed around the Science Centre’s stunning location in the South Downs National Park and head outside to find out more about the birds, bugs and plants of this ecologically important area.

Become an Acoustic Explorer this Autumn

Sound is set to get awesome this autumn with the new live science show, Acoustic Explorers. The final show in our 2021 Year of Sound is one not to be missed.

From Saturday 25 September to Sunday 21 November put your investigation skills to the test and become an Acoustic Explorer. Take an adventure through some epic sounds and find out what an acoustic engineer does. Discover what reverberation is and how we can use it to control sound. And watch as this all comes to life with some scientific smoke and mirrors.

And that’s not all…

If you need a break from all the fun, spend some time in the Recombobulation Room, a specially designed quiet space away from the hustle and bustle of the Science Centre. Or why not relax with a hot drink or mouth-wateringly tasty treat from the café before continuing your STEM journey at home with a souvenir from the shop.
