Sonning is a riverside village near Reading in Berkshire, located on a scenic stretch of the River Thames. It is popular for Thames Path walks, gentle riverside strolls and relaxed days out. Sonning, occasionally called Sonning-on-Thames is a civil parish in the Borough of Wokingham. The historical name of the village of Sunning is derived from the name of the Old English Sunna that was a Saxon chief whose people were widespread in eastern Berkshire.
Older, more traditional villagers still pronounce the name of the village in this way and the spelling can be found on old maps and documents. The area is so beauitful it is fit for Hollywood star George Clooney and his wife who moved into the area in 2014.
Enjoy a unique riverside dinner‑theatre experience at The Mill at Sonning, a restored watermill offering acclaimed plays, dining and views over the Thames. With much of the original structure retained, this 18th Century Flour Mill has been converted into a renowned Dinner Theatre. Patrons enjoy a fresh home-cooked meal before watching the performance in the 217 seat air conditioned auditorium.
Stroll beside the River Thames to Sonning Lock and Weir, a peaceful spot to watch boats, enjoy riverside walks and soak up classic Thames‑side scenery. One of the most picturesque locks on the Thames, its well-maintained gardens and floral displays around the lock keeper's house. Stop for refreshments in the tea garden between April and October before continuing along the tow path and enjoy the magical scenery surrounding this village - a joy for cyclists and walkers.
Sonning Bridge is an iconic 18th‑century brick bridge that links Berkshire and Oxfordshire offering beautiful river views and photo opportunities on one of the prettiest stretches of the Thames. It’s also a wonderful spot for sunrise or early‑evening photos when the light reflects off the Thames.
This easy circular walk links the Thames Path with village lanes, meadows and riverside views, perfect for a relaxed stroll exploring Sonning on foot. It’s ideal for a leisurely walk, with plenty of places to stop for refreshments in the village afterwards.
