The White Dog

About

With endless views over the rolling Sussex countryside and historic Bodiam Castle in the foreground, a more fabulous setting would be hard to find. This attractive red-brick and tile-hung pub has recently come under new ownership and is now family run. Inside you’ll find a classic old-style country pub that has retained many original features to give a warm ambience, such as the enormous brick fireplace with a log fire ablaze in colder months. In warmer months swap the cosy inside for the perfect beer garden, where visitors happily sit for hours staring at the stunning view, with a refreshing drink in one hand and a tasty baguette in the other.

The restaurant is very welcoming with its York stone floor and there is plenty of space seated at wood tables topped with candles standing in very neat rows. Beautifully cooked and presented dishes lure foodies from afar. The menu changes with the seasons and if nothing takes your fancy there is also a very generous Specials board above the fireplace. Local is the watchword when it comes to food and drink. Classy renditions of pub classics make good use of what’s available just around the corner: vegetables from Williams Brothers in Rye; meat from Natural Farms in Ewhurst Green, bread from Lighthouse Bakery also in Ewhurst Green, to name just a few.

There are two roomy bedrooms available for bed and breakfast. Both are immaculate, well appointed with simple furnishings and decorated in soothing soft shades. The comfy pine beds are made up with crisp white linen but, without a doubt, the biggest bonus is the view.
