The Polecat Inn

About

Claiming to be the only pub in the UK called The Polecat, this rather quaint rural pub, supporting a partial timber frame, is housed in an former hunting lodge dating back to the 1600s.

Outside the sizable and beautiful gardens, displaying colourful summer hanging baskets, lots of spring bulbs and herbaceous plants, is part of its great attraction. Parking is plentiful, too.

There are quite a few picnic-sets under parasols on neat grass out in front beneath a big pear tree, and more on a spacious well-kept back lawn. Here you will find an excellent children’s play area that will keep the kids amused while you enjoy freshly cooked traditional fayre, cask ales and warm, chatty hospitality.

Inside, the pub has been renovated and extended to create an attractive setting that still retains many original features. The décor is slightly chintzy: small country pictures, rugs on bare boards or red tiles, and a couple of antique housekeeper's chairs by a good open fire. The smallish low-beamed rooms radiating from the central bar give many options when it comes to choosing where to eat or sup hand-pumped beers from local craft brewers such at Malt's Prestwood Best, Vale Breweries Red Kite and Rebellion Brewery's IPA, or perhaps a glass of delicious wine or home-made summer elderflower pressé.

Well-presented dishes are freshly prepared from local ingredients and the menu has plenty of choices, including lunchtime snacks. Daily blackboard specials add to the selection.

The surrounding Chilterns’ countryside provides some of the best walking opportunities in the area. And don’t forget to bring your dog along – they will always be very welcome at The Polecat Inn.
