About

Nestling in a gap in the Chiltern Hills, the picturesque town of Wendover is known as the ‘Gateway to the Chilterns’ and is an ideal base for walkers and nature lovers. On the direct rail route from Aylesbury to London Marylebone and with easy road access, Wendover is in the Metropolitan Green Belt and Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is well situated to give the city-tired visitor a peaceful interlude in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside.

As well as the Ridgeway Path, the National Trail that passes down the main High Street, there are 33 miles of public rights of way and bridleways criss-crossing the parish. These paths will take you over the open chalk downland of Coombe Hill with its impressive monument to the local men who died in the Boer War, or walk to the pretty hamlet of Dunsmore in the spring and enjoy the carpet of bluebells, or stroll through the shaded woods on Boddington Hill. Here the visitor can enjoy specially prepared cycle routes, all ability walks and barbecue sites, as well as play areas for the children.

This charming little town boasts a distinctive red brick, spired clock tower at its centre, which was built in 1842 and is the current home of the Tourist Information Centre. The town has had a Royal charter to hold a weekly market since 1464, which is held on Thursdays, and there is a Farmers’ Market held on the third Saturday of each month.

Wendover is situated at the terminus of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal. Disused for over a century, the arm is in the course of being restored by the Wendover Arm Trust. Remote and rural for almost all its length, the canal attracts much local wildlife.

The high street offers boutique clothes shops and quaint antique shops and there are a selection of restaurants and cafes that are perfect for anything from a bite to eat to a special dinner.
