Writing Our Legacy @ Changing Chalk - Summer Season Day 2023

Join us for food, nature, readings, talks and workshops at Waterhall, a former golf course site on the edge of the city.

We are pleased to share a free half day of food and activities as part of our Writing Our Legacy @ Changing Chalk seasonal public programme day of activities.

We will be visiting Waterhall Clubhouse, a former golf club is located on the South Downs just south of Devil's Dyke, with incredible views of rolling hills and rare chalk grassland. The building is situated in the heart of the city's rewildling project – Wilding Waterhall. A perfect get-away space for a fresh perspective.

We will have opportunity to hear new writing from writers involved in our schemes, including Writing Our Legacy @ Changing Chalk Associate Artist Nina Thaddeus, who will be leading a one-hour workshop.

We will also have a talk about the chalk grassland with National Trust ranger Kim Greaves.

We will provide lunch and drinks refreshment, plus an opportunity to come explore the wilding site, which has multiple paths, or to hang out outside at the picnic benches.

All activity is free and all are welcome to this inclusive day of activities. It is a relaxed and informal event.

You are welcome to make a donation towards lunch if you can, but no one is obliged.

Writing Our Legacy @ Changing Chalk is part of the Changing Chalk project led by the National Trust and funded by the National Lottery funded Heritage Fund. The day is also supported by Shifting the Gaze, in partnership with South Downs National Park Authority.

During the whole session you can explore on your own, we wil have advice to help your explorations.

Workshop with Nina Thaddeus
Following a short reading and introduction to the wild orchids of the south downs, participants will be invited to explore the micro and macro, or our inner and outer landscape and how they interact.

The session will include writing prompts and a chance for participants to explore the local landscape with botany lenses and relaxing sensory exercises.

The session will be open to ages 8+. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants can remain indoors, and the event will be fully accessible.

Nina Thaddeus is the author of 'I love to see you eat', a self-published reflection of her mother's Anglo Indian life from Karachi to Crawley. Born in Pakistan, her family immigrated to the UK in the 1950's and settled in Sussex where Nina has spent most of her life. Her writing has been published in the Hidden Sussex anthology and first edition of Covert magazine. Nina is passionate about nature, and as a Forest School Leader has run many outdoor well-being and environmental education events.
