This exhibition of pioneering photographer Dorothy Bohm takes her declaration 'I think of women as the most natural subjects for me' as a starting point, revealing an astute awareness of the male gaze. Taken around the world and across decades, these photographs include images taken in Sussex when Bohm owned a working farm near Billingshurst.
Born in East Prussia (today Kaliningrad in Russia) in 1924, Bohm was uprooted to escape Nazism and was sent to an English boarding school in nearby Ditchling. After studying photography in Manchester, it was Bohm's post-war travel, photographing international street scenes with profound humanity, which she became renowned for.
Please note we are open Thursday, Friday, Sunday and select Saturdays.
