Windsor and Maidenhead
Experience the magic of Christmas at Windsor Castle, where magnificent festive displays transform the world's oldest and largest occupied castle into a seasonal spectacle.
Visitors entering the State Apartments will discover beautifully decorated historic interiors, including a magnificent Christmas tree in St George's Hall. Sourced from Windsor Great Park, the impressive 20 foot-high Nordman fir tree will be adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and elegant green and gold Windsor Castle Christmas decorations. Throughout the Castle, festive garlands will complement the grand spaces, including the Waterloo Chamber and the sweeping Grand Staircase. Look out for the hand-carved golden fruits within the garlands, these are based on Grinling Gibbons wood carvings that can be found throughout the castle.
The richly decorated Crimson Drawing Room, one of the spectacular Semi-State Rooms that is only open during the winter season, will provide a stunning setting for an additional Christmas tree, surrounded by opulent red silk furnishings and ornate gilded details.
A visit to Windsor Castle is one of the top festive things to do in Windsor at Christmas.
The famous Queen Mary's Dolls' House receives its own festive makeover, featuring miniature seasonal decorations, tiny garlands and a beautifully dressed Christmas tree. Visitors can spot intricate handmade details throughout this remarkable miniature residence - one of the largest and most famous dolls' houses in the world.
During the festive season, visitors can also explore St George's Chapel, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England, on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Daily services are open to all throughout the week.
After exploring the Castle, visitors can enjoy warming seasonal food and drinks at the Undercroft Café, located within one of the oldest surviving parts of the Castle.
Families can enjoy a range of seasonal activities on the 12 - 13 December and throughout the school holidays. Special Victorian-themed family activities and creative sessions, make it an ideal festive day out for all ages.
On selected dates throughout November and December, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the Castle after hours on special evening tours of the State Apartments, offering a unique perspective on the royal residence during the festive season.
Please note that Windsor Castle is normally closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, except for Tuesday 22 and Tuesday 29 December when the Castle will be open. Visitors are advised to check opening dates and times before travelling for this festive day in Berkshire.
