Top 5 ‘Must Sees’ this Autumn in West Sussex
22nd September 2022
Where better to kick up golden leaves, make the most of short sunny days and discover sparkling dark nights? Explore our coast and countryside on foot, by bike or on the water (it’s warmest in September and October!) before enjoying a delicious local meal in one of our charming village inns. Easy to get to, hard to leave behind, West Sussex really is beautiful at this time of year.
1. Our Colourful Coast
On a windy day, the sea from Shoreham to Bracklesham Bay will dance with multi-coloured kites, windsurfers and wing-foilers. Learn the sport at one of the many watersports schools along the beach from Worthing to Littlehampton, or just relax at one of the numerous beach cafes and watch the spectacle.
2. Our Heritage and Autumn Leaves
The Ouse Valley Viaduct is one of the top Instagram spots in Sussex. Park at Ardingly Reservoir and take a picturesque autumnal walk through the trees and nature reserve to the Viaduct. Don’t forget your camera! You can explore the pretty village of Cuckfield afterwards too.
3. Our River Wildlife
Try a kayak safari on the River Arun, where you can get up close to the aquatic wildlife, as it wends its way down past the Arundel Castle and through the South Downs National Park to the sea. Or hop on board a boat safari at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre to see the birds.
4. Our Award-Winning Vineyards
It’s harvest time – so why not visit one of our award-winning vineyards, see the process and enjoy a tasting. DEFRA has now recognised Sussex wine as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), giving it the same protected status as Cornish clotted cream and Stilton cheese.
5. Our Amazing Dark Skies
And, when the sun sets, immerse yourself in the universe with a Dark Skies experience. As part of a designated International Dark Sky Reserve, Devils Dyke is a spectacular stargazing hotspot. All you really need are warm clothes, a hot drink and a clear, dark sky.
