About
In the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you will find one of England's most stunning hidden secrets, an area known as First Light Coast & Country. This isolated 'island' of countryside and coastline in the midst of the White Cliffs, has at its heart the quaint seaside village of St Margaret's-at-Cliffe with its secluded cove at St Margaret's Bay and it is here you will find Well Cottage.
The surrounding countryside is spectacular at all times of the year especially the winter months when the bracing winds blow and that rare feeling of solitude can be experienced on the cliff top paths.
Offering an inspiring backdrop to a range of activities, you can take in cliff top scenery and wooded valleys under pedal power, roam along the deserted coastline or get off the beaten track amongst the rolling green hills of the Downs. For a different experience why not saddle up and enjoy a quiet trot along peaceful lanes.
Atop the headland at St Margaret's Bay is one of the South East England's most recognisable landmarks - the South Foreland Lighthouse. For years this lighthouse warned ships in the channel of the dangerous shoreline below and it was Thomas Eddison who installed an electric light in this lighthouse for the first time anywhere in the world.
Continue from the headland and follow the valley down to the Bay to discover the Pines Visitor Centre and Museum. Opposite you'll find the stunning Pines Garden, watched over by an impressive statue of Sir Winston Churchill.
For windsurfers who like 'big air', the Bay offers a challenging spot from which to launch. With a big South-westerly and the backdrop of the White Cliffs this beach is hard to beat and it's been a secret spot for local surfers, kayakers and canoeists for some time.
If you fancy a spot of big game fishing White Cliffs style, take your tackle to the beach where the catch of the day could be sea bass, mackerel, dogfish or sole. Keep the binoculars handy and see if you can spy seals, guillemots, great crested grebes, little egrets, and even the occasional dolphin or basking shark.
With golf courses at nearby Kingsdown, Deal and the famous Royal St Georges at Sandwich, whatever your choice of holiday pursuits you can be certain there is something for everyone. Being close to the bustling Port of Dover a taste of continental life is just over an hour away. So you could awake in one of England's prettiest villages, spend the day shopping and dining in France and be home in time for bed!
Despite being well over 100 years old, Well Cottage has a stylish new interior design. A decor of neutral chalky shades with dashes of colour gives the cottage a relaxed elegance. Spacious and comfortable with two double bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen diner and the chic lounge is an ideal place to kick back with a chilled glass of champagne in front of the open fire. Outside the sheltered courtyard patio is perfect for enjoying the afternoon sun or a spot of al fresco dining.
