Medway Towns

Medway is a vibrant, thriving destination offering enriching experiences with many stories to tell. It takes its name from the magnificent river that flows through it and comprises of the five towns of Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham and Strood.

The area is steeped in history and rich in maritime heritage, with Rochester's splendid castle and cathedral and The Historic Dockyard Chatham, a prospective World Heritage Site.

2012 marks the bicentenary of the birth of one of Britain's greatest novelists and storytellers, Charles Dickens. The area featured in the works of Charles Dickens, who lived here as a child and returned as an established authour. Many of the buildings that can be found in Rochester carry plaques, giving details of how Dickens incorporated the site into his novels, and only a few miles from Rochester is the exciting indoor visitor attraction, 'Dickens World.'

Whether you are interested in exploring the places Charles Dickens loved and wrote about, visiting heritage and family attractions, or attending one of our fabulous festivals - you will find an area packed with excitement, variety and unique experiences.
