Opening this year's Winchester Jazz Festival, composer and saxophonist Tom Barford, winner of the 2017 Kenny Wheeler Prize, brings his quartet to The Nutshell for an evening of ambitious, eclectic and virtuosic contemporary jazz.
Tom's name has been known to jazz aficionados for some years, and this special performance brings together an exceptional line-up. The quartet features acclaimed trumpeter James Copus alongside pianist Ivo Neame, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Tim Giles — a remarkable London ensemble built on years of musical connection, mutual respect and collaboration.
The band will perform Tom's original compositions, alongside arrangements of Joe Henderson classics. Drawing inspiration from musicians including Wayne Shorter and Vince Mendoza, the music moves between intricate compositions, exhilarating fast-tempo playing and beautifully crafted arrangements.
The Nutshell Jazz Club offers a relaxed, intimate cabaret-style setting where audiences can bring their own food and drinks and settle in for an evening of world-class jazz.
