Sin has permeated life since the earliest days, but until now the story of its relation to art has never been told.
Artists have embraced sin as one of art's most enduring subjects. Bringing together works of art that span centuries, the exhibition, which is organised in partnership with the National Gallery, explores the concept of sin in art in a unique presentation. The Arc, Winchester, is the third stop on an exclusive tour of four venues across the UK.
The exhibition looks at complex theological ideas and depictions of 'sinful' everyday behaviour that blur the boundaries between religious and secular art. Visitors will be able to observe the ever-changing representations of sin in European visual culture through eight historic works from the National Gallery's renowned collection. Works include Rembrandt's The Woman taken in Adultery (1644) and Jan Steen's The Effects of Intemperance (about 1663-5). These are joined by two highly significant contemporary loaned works, by artists Tracey Emin and Ron Mueck.
Sin is curated by Dr Joost Joustra, Ahmanson Research Associate Curator in Art and Religion at The National Gallery, London. Exhibition organised by the National Gallery, London and Hampshire Cultural Trust.
