Once an 18th Century hunting lodge, The Vineyard has more recently been described as a temple to Californian Wine. Just outside Newbury about an hour from London, it lives up to its reputation and more.
The cellar holds on 30,000 new and old wines, as well as the award winning estate wines of the owner, Sir Peter Michael. His world-class winery was established in 1982 on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges, which form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley, Sonoma County.
Hear Sommelier, Romain Bourger, and his team of ‘wine coaches’ are known for their warm and friendly approach. Wine and food pairing is a particular skill they delight in, and one more reason why The Vineyards’ restaurant, aka food heaven to those in the know, is well worth the trip.
At the helm of the kitchen is Executive Chef, Tom Scade, an inspirational chef that takes local and seasonal produce to create classical British dishes using modern techniques. The perfect opportunity to indulge the palate is the Judgement of Paris seven course tasting menu, derived from the iconic wine tasting that inspired the hotel’s journey.
A destination restaurant deserves a great hotel, and again The Vineyard doesn’t disappoint. Spacious contemporary suites and traditional bedrooms come with generous marble bathrooms and all the goodies you’d expect.
Each room is named after an iconic wine from around the world.
Put all this together with an award-winning spa and you’ve got the ideal venue for a weekend away or for special events.
Weddings of all sizes are easily accommodated within the elegant and flexible spaces, and for a real fairytale you can even book the whole hotel.
It also makes a welcome alternative for conferences and product launches. BMW and Rolls Royce are among those who have done just that.
Business meetings are easily accommodated, with a choice of four meeting rooms with breakout areas.
As an enthusiastic patron of the arts, Sir Peter Michael believes that music, painting and sculpture enrich the world we live in, which is why guest at The Vineyard can anticipate a feast for the eyes while enjoying fine wines and exquisite food.
Works by Henry Martin, Ronald Searle, Boris Smirnoff, Doris Zinkeisen, William Pye and Diane Maclean are part of Sir Peter’s superb private collection ‘After the Upset’, by Gary Myatt, was commissioned to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the famous international Judgement of Paris tasting that finally put California wines firmly on the map beating France’s best.
The Michael Collection is as electric as The Vineyard’s cellar. Something for everyone and never disappointing.
