Rochester Cathedral Singing Outreach Project

Rochester Cathedral Singing Outreach Project

11th November 2009

Categories: Kent news

The vibrant and dynamic voices of two hundred local primary school children, together with those of the Cathedral Choristers and Lay Clerks, will fill Rochester Cathedral this coming Monday, 16th November at 1.00pm.

The children coming together for this concert are from the Pilgrim School, Borstal, Church of England Primary School, Stone, St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, St James’ Isle of Grain Church of England Primary School, and Lordswood Junior School in Chatham.  They are part of Rochester Cathedral’s Singing Outreach Programme, run on behalf of the Cathedral Choir Schools’ Association and Sing-Up, for which a Government grant has been received to continue this valuable work for a further year.  Suzzie Vango and Matt Jelf, both experienced and talented singing teachers, have been visiting the schools each week since September, communicating their love of singing and enthusing the children to participate and sing.

The concert is the highlight of this term’s project.  The children will perform, along with the Choristers and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral, a varied selection of upbeat music, including a piece by the Cathedral Choir and Darth Vader’s theme from Star Wars, played on the organ by the Cathedral Director of Music, Scott Farrell.  This promises to be a very exciting event, particularly for children, and the Cathedral looks forward to welcoming everyone.
Last year, nearly six hundred children were involved in the Cathedral’s Chorister Outreach Project and we hope to increase this number to nearly eight hundred this year!
