“What makes Oxford such a special place?”

A new public art work for Oxford Castle
launching 5th September 2008
As part of her project ‘Parallel Worlds’, supported by an Art Plus Award from Arts Council England and SEEDA, Oxford-based artist Katy Beinart will be unveiling her new public art works for the Oxford Castle site on September 5th.
The artworks, funded by Arts Council England, are the culmination of a two year research process which saw the artist involve local residents in photographing their favourite views of Oxford, as well as taking part in an “Alternative Bus Tour” of the City. Sited at the original location of the West Gate into Oxford, the artworks offer both tourists and residents a new perspective.
While appearing to be part of the familiar tourist vernacular, the new artworks give the viewer unexpected views on the City of Oxford and the different “worlds” within it. As part of the new artworks, Katy has also created a unique map which explores some of the untold history of how Oxfords’ built environment has changed, as well as charting hidden places, making “non-places” into sites of importance.
