No.3 Slip Inspires Best in Show at Art in the Dockyard Competition

19th September 2008

Sheilagh Dyson, of Maidstone, won the ‘Best in Show’ Award at the biennial ‘Art in the Dockyard Open Competition’ at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. The award was presented at a Gala Preview Evening on Friday 12th September.

According to the judges Sheilagh’s winning piece of artwork titled simply ‘No. 3 Slip’ was “both inspirational and imaginative and completely met the requirements of the theme ‘Ideas and Innovations at the former Royal Dockyard’ “. Her work was a mixed media entry and incorporated photographic images of the impressive wooden No.3 Covered Slip at The Historic Dockyard on a necklace and bracelet. Sheilagh was presented with a cheque for £500 donated by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Joe Binns Cup by Admiral Sir Ian Garnett, Chairman of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust.

Following its success in 2006, the ‘Art in the Dockyard’ returned to The Historic Dockyard earlier this year.  Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust invited artists and photographers from all over the South East to paint, sketch and photograph within the dockyard to enable them to enter their work in the competition, open to both amateurs and professionals. Subsequently the work is now on show in an exhibition which continues until 2nd November 2008.

There were 29 entrants in the competition submitting a total of 46 pieces of work for judging.

The three judges, Roger Crosby of Slater Crosby Photographic, Nettie Iles-North of Francis Iles Art & Craft Shops and Tim Meacham of the University for the Creative Arts Rochester, reviewed all the competition entries and took several hours to make difficult decisions in choosing the prize winners.

Judges Special Awards and Highly Commended Awards were presented together with first prizes for work in three different categories; Paintings, Photography and Mixed Media.
