Great eats
There's an endless supply of great places to eat out in Hampshire. Here's a nibble at the selection.
The Star Inn is a 16th Century inn adjoining the village cricket green at Tytherly between Winchester, Salisbury and the New Forest. Set in beautiful woodland with a chalk stream running by, it serves excellent contemporary food.
Southampton is not short on places to eat out, but Oxford Street with the stylish White Star Tavern, is more than a cut above the rest.
The ancient environment of the Tudor building that houses The Kitchen in Petersfield makes a great contrast with its relaxed, contemporary interior - and its top-notch modern food.
Westover Hall Hotel in Milford on Sea has a restaurant that is a gastronomic delight in a traditional hotel with views of the Needles lighthouse on the Isle of Wight. A few miles west is the clifftop Pebble Beach Restaurant in Barton-on-Sea - fantastic for contemporary al-fresco dining.
On the outskirts of Brockenhurst, and right in heart of the New Forest is Le Poussin at Whitley Ridge, where the Michelin-starred chef produces fantastic food in this country house hotel.
More tea, vicar? Places to take afternoon tea are plentiful in the towns and villages of Hampshire. A perennial favourite is the quaint atmosphere of Gilbert White's House in Selbourne.
