You can’t help being impressed in Arundel, West Sussex. From exploring the magnificent Arundel Castle to pottering on the River Arun, it’s an almost fairytale destination.
There’s so much history in Arundel, all of it dominated by the Castle. Standing proudly on a hill, Arundel Castle has been the home of the Dukes of Norfolk for more than 850 years. With tempting towers and turrets you’ll want to get inside those castellated walls. Inside, suits of armour guard rooms hung with wonderful paintings and you’ll long to curl up with a book in the grand yet cosy library.
Shopping in Arundel is equally tempting with lots of antique shops, studios and gift shops. There are some lovely tea rooms in Arundel where you can grab a bite. You can also pick up a boat on the River Arun in Arundel and potter down to Littlehampton.
Things to do in Arundel . . .
- On the west bank of the River Arun is Arundel Cathedral, an imposing Gothic building.
- Visit the Amberley Working Museum just outside the town - a 36 acre open air museum which looks at dying trades and industrial heritage; take a ride on an old bus and see how wheelwrights and blacksmiths used to work.
- Goodwood Estate is also nearby. Look around Goodwood House and the Estate. Time your visit for the Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival or the horse racing at Goodwood Racecourse and you’ll see why they call it glorious.
