Behind the Scenes at Seed
16th September 2008
RHS Garden Wisley, 21 – 22 September
A secret hive of activity will be revealed at RHS Garden Wisley when ‘Behind the Scenes at Seed’ opens to visitors on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 September from 10am – 3pm daily.
Visitors can see for themselves how millions of seeds are painstakingly collected, sorted, cleaned, stored, packaged and distributed each year, contributing to a world-wide exchange programme that benefits hundreds of international Botanical institutions.
Janet Corrigan, Senior Supervisor in the Seed Department says:
‘We are all very excited as we have never opened our doors to visitors before. The Seed Department plays a vital role in plant preservation, but it is often behind closed doors. The distribution of seed to schools, partner gardens and RHS members is just one way that we hope to encourage gardening in the UK and abroad.’
Highlights at the event include a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the department, special displays and the chance to see staff and volunteers at work. The event is free with normal garden entry and the tours run continuously throughout the day, on a first come, first served basis.
Access to seed collected from RHS Gardens is just one benefit for members of the RHS. To find out more about RHS Membership visit ww.rhs.org.uk/join for more information.
