Alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal, the largest town in West Berkshire, Newbury, has a bustling high street with many interesting shops, which include unique stores such as family-run department store Camp Hopson. Once a month the town is also visited by the farmer’s market, crammed full with delicious, local produce. There are also vibrant cafes and canalside pubs and restaurants. Make an evening out of a trip to the town. Sit back and relax at the Corn Exchange theatre which has a lively events programme. When you’ve had your fill of shopping wander along the canal path to Victoria Park, admire the swans or join a boat trip. In spring and summer months colourful, fun packed events like Newbury Comedy Festival are held here. On the Wharf in fine listed buildings you’ll find the Tourist Information Centre, packed with ideas of what to do in West Berkshire, and the charming West Berkshire Museum. Here you can discover the town’s rich history centered around trades, such as cloth weaving. Jack O’Newbury, local clothier was just one of the characters so instrumental in shaping the town’s history. Overlooking the town is another Newbury landmark. Donnington Castle saw much action during the civil wars of 1643 and 1644. Today all that is left is the gatehouse but visitors are still attracted by the views. Also just outside the town is the internationally renowned Newbury Racecourse positioned in a stunning setting and boasting fantastic hospitality. A super day out for all ages!
