Farley's House and Gallery

A warm welcome awaits you at Farleys House in the spirit of its former Surrealist occupants, the photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose.
Tucked away in the Sussex countryside Farleys House conjures up an extraordinary atmosphere that testifies to its position as a meeting place for some of the key personalities in twentieth century art.

Lee Miller and Roland Penrose came to live at Farleys in 1949 and for the thirty five years that followed they built up a collection of contemporary art treasures, many of which were created by their friends and visitors including Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Paul Éluard and Joan Miró. The work of these and numerous others are exhibited in the house alongside those of Penrose and Miller giving the visitor a fascinating look into the world of the Surrealists.

Today the collection is managed by the Penrose family as a privately run archive and museum.  Each Sunday (April – October) the house, sculpture garden and gallery open at 10am and 50 minute guided tours of the house run at half past the hour from 10.30am until 3.30pm.  Tickets are available from reception on arrival.
Surrounding the house is a beautiful garden that was designed by Roland Penrose. The garden holds a permanent sculpture collection alongside temporary exhibits and enjoy views to the Sussex Downs.
To complement your visit to the house a programme of exhibitions by contemporary artists are shown alongside a selection of Lee Miller prints in the beautiful old Sussex barn adjacent to the house.
