The National Trust
Welcome to the National Trust properties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, with their unique insight into country living through the ages. The Trust's rich roll-call of houses, gardens, castles and countryside includes some of the most marvellous and memorable examples of their kind. From the little Sandham Memorial Chapel decorated with Stanley Spencer's paintings to Knole - England's largest private house, they represent every era, purpose and style: Chastleton House; Italianate West Wycombe Park, the treasure house of Waddesdon Manor or the country retreats of Prime Ministers and politicians such as Winston Churchill's Chartwell, Disraeli's Hughenden Manor or Cliveden, Nancy Astor's sumptuous riverside home. Their gardens are spellbinding too. Scotney Castle, the last word in romance; Victorian Emmett's Garden with its spectacular views; Stowe's magnificence, Greys Court with its maze and donkey wheel - between them they showpiece centuries of landscaped magnificence and the gardeners' meticulous art. Together with our visitor centres, like The White Cliffs at Dover, such gardens as these play their part in opening up the miles of walks, vistas and views in the superb coast and countryside in the care of the National Trust. Enjoy their regular opening days and take advantage of their special events, from guided garden tours at Hughenden to wine tasting at Waddesdon or a picnic with music at Stowe.
