Nearby, Winchester College has the longest continuous history of any English school, magnificently well-preserved from 1382. Just up the hill, The Great Hall is home to the legendary King Arthur’s Round Table, which whispers tales of brave knights. And, amongst the spires and medieval stonework, vibrant, modern Winchester offers eclectic independent shopping and an abundance of eateries.

Reading: where history meets innovation.

Unravel Reading

Nestling in the heart of Berkshire, Reading is a town you might not automatically consider for your itineraries. But since the opening of the brand-new Elizabeth Line and with its existing Great Western mainline link and coach parking, it is now one of the most accessible towns in the UK.

Discover a town bursting with great accommodation, group-friendly River Thames trips, great shopping and a vibrant nightlife. You'll find surprising heritage going back 900 years, including the only full-scale replica of the Bayeux Tapestry, quirky museums, great places to eat and plenty of green spaces to walk and explore. The starting point of the St James Way, the England leg of the Camino de Santiago, makes it an ideal base for walking fans too.

Regular steam and heritage diesel services run from April to October and there are numerous special events. The line is primarily staffed by dedicated volunteers, who care for its iconic locomotives and picturesque stations, and are renowned for their warm, friendly welcome.
