History of the Goodwood Aerodrome
There is a rich history of aviation at Goodwood which began during the Second World War. Goodwood Aerodrome was formerly known as RAF Westhampnett as it was built to act as a satellite airfield to nearby Tangmere Airfield. From here Hurricanes and Spitfires flew in the Battle of Britain.
Following WW2, the Aerodrome remained in use, with the 9th Duke of Richmond a keen aviator and a member of the Royal Aero Club, building his own aircraft and flying them from Goodwood Aerodrome.
Goodwood Flying School was opened in 1966 and since opening has trained hundreds of would-be pilots, many of whom have gone on to become commercial pilots.
For over three hundred years, friends, family and guests have been visiting Goodwood to enjoy the sport and its famous hospitality. The first Duke of Richmond initially came to Goodwood to enjoy the fox hunting with the famous Charlton Hunt. He bought the house in 1697 and his descendants have lived in it ever since. It is now known as England’s greatest sporting estate.
In addition to aviation, horseracing, motor racing, flying, golf, shooting and cricket have all been brought to Goodwood by enthusiastic family members.
Goodwood Aerodrome is located just three miles from the centre of Chichester and within the Goodwood Motor Circuit.
