Fort Victoria Country Park

About

Fort Victoria, a short walk from Yarmouth, is a great family day out come rain or shine. The Victorian fort sits in a grassy area next to the sea and has stunning views out over the Solent, especially from its roof. Within the fort buildings are a number of visitor attractions and a café, the original parade ground is now a large free car park. Surrounding the fort is a country park with over 20 hectares of woodlands and a rocky beach to explore.

Fort Victoria was completed in 1855, commissioned by Queen Victoria in response to the threat of a French invasion. The fort was in active use by various military units until 1962 when the Isle of Wight Council purchased it. There are many signs of its military past dotted around the site including some of its cannons, one on a replica mount in its original position.

Explore the woodlands on some of the many paths and look out for red squirrels hiding in the trees as well as some additional woodland ‘characters’ dotted around. The Island’s coastal path runs through the woodland and will take you to a viewpoint with fabulous views across to Hurst Castle. Wind your way back down through the landslip to the rocky beach which is great for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

The Country Park is free and open all year round, the attractions and café are all open from Easter to the end of October, some are open during winter as well. There is an entrance fee for each attraction or you can buy a combined saver ticket which includes a drink at the café. Please check with individual attractions for detailed opening times and admission charges.
