The Wheatsheaf

This small endearing building is entered directly off the street through a low cottage-style door to a surprisingly elongated area. Standing in the centre of this lively market town, there is certain buzz about the place, particularly at lunch time.

Newly refurbished, the shabby-chic furnishings give the pub originality all of its own. Exposed brickwork is painted in various shades of grey and an eclectic mix of tables and chairs enhance its appeal. To the front of the dining area is a bar with comfy chairs for relaxing with a great pint of real ale or glass of wine.

The efficient staff work hard to create a warm and friendly atmosphere, and they succeed. Outside on the decked terrace, rugs and heaters are a thoughtful addition to help keep you warm on cooler days.

The menu focuses on classic British dishes and ingredients, to reflect the building’s history as a ‘proper pub’. Experienced head chef Jay Williams turns out delicious modern food from the open kitchen, which is always beautifully presented.

Remi gets satisfaction from taking good quality seasonal ingredients and trying to maximise the flavour he can get from them. This could mean quickly braising asparagus instead of blanching it, or using pan juices to beef up a garnish or a sauce. He is very particular about cooking meats, and recognizes the importance of key processes such as ‘resting’, which allow the flavours to come through and for the meat to be at its most tender.
