About

ROMAN ERA - COMBLEY ROMAN VILLA:
The mysteries of our buried roman villa are revealed in this historical new exhibition barn at Robin Hill.

Combley Roman Villa is a buried farmstead that was originally built after the Roman invasion of Britain in 43AD. It lasted for nearly 400 years before it fell to ruin and became buried until 1910, when the first excavation was made of the Robin Hill site. The Villa’s remains are now reburied for protection, but our new interpretation barn tells the story of its rise and fall and of the archaeological digs that revealed it to the world, but you don’t have to love history to enjoy this exhibit.

You can also see:
• Interactive floor mosaic ~ Roman armour display
• Virtual Villa tour ~ Excavation model & more images
• Roman artefact finds from the digs ~ Roman Villa time-line
• The display makes an interesting alternative to the Roman villa displays at Brading & Newport which have fine examples of exposed villa ruins.

MODERN ERA - TIME MACHINE:
Robin Hill’s Time Machine motion simulator has had a 21st Century make over and can now show some of the best 4D HD simulator movies that money can buy!

So get ready to don your glasses and get set for the ride of your life with this year’s newest release Night at The Toy Store. It’s an exciting whirlwind journey around an enchanted children's toys store... See what the toys get up to after everyone leaves and the lights go out...

MODERN - TREE SCULPTURE
One of the oldest trees in our ancient woodland. The tree sculpture was carved in the summer of 2009 by nationally renowned chainsaw artist Paul Sivell. It is recognised as the tallest one of its type in the world. The tree was carved in a standing position and was fully scaffolded for safety as work took place.

Other taller tree carvings exist (totem poles etc) but these are all carved with the tree trunks lying on the ground, which are then stood back up once carving is complete. Carving a standing tree is far more skilled and difficult to do with the added dangers of working at great height with dangerous machinery.

Taking only 20 days to complete, Paul worked with several assistants to carve the 19m (57ft) sweet chestnut tree with only chisels and chainsaws. The tree had died the previous year and was due to be felled before it was decided that a record breaking sculpture could be created.

Research shows that our sculpture is 30cm taller (1ft) than the previous record holder that stands in Southern Chile. The carvings represent a fascinating time-line of local history starting from 2000 years ago at the bottom to the 21st Century at the top, with many historic points in between.

With free unlimited return visits over a seven day period, award-winning Robin Hill definitely qualifies as one of the Island’s favourite country attractions. The park boasts a fantastic blend of rides and adventure play for fun, loving families & children and relaxing woodland gardens, ponds and sculpture walks for discerning adults to enjoy.

New for 2014, our fun and exciting ‘Days of Adventure’ where visitors are invited to ‘test their aim’ at archery and ‘get hands on’ with fire lighting and survival skills as part of our bushcraft activities. For those with a wilder side, we’re also providing Mountain boarding taster sessions …. a great adrenaline fuelled sport perfect for the older kids!

Our special Days of Adventure will take place each Friday, 11th & 18th April, during the Easter holidays, Monday 26th – Friday 30th May during Whitsun week and every Friday from 25th July – 29th August for the summer holidays. All these activities are included in our admission price and FREE returns.

We love wildlife at Robin Hill. Our twice daily falconry displays at 11.30am and 2.45pm are renowned to be some of the best in the UK! We also host woodland owl displays daily at 1.15pm and again at 4.15 during peak periods. Alaska, the amazing bald Eagle and Nimbus & Luna, two sibling barn owls, are the main stars of these amazing displays! Robin Hill is also one of the best places on the Island to spot a rare red squirrel and is a magnet for wildlife enthusiasts.
