Aspex is Portsmouth's leading contemporary art gallery, housed within the historic Vulcan Building at Gunwharf Quays. Explore innovative, contemporary visual art with an ever-changing programme of exhibitions, workshops and events for the entire family.
Aspex exists to support emerging artists, expose the creative process, and engage new audiences with visual art.
We achieve this by delivering an exciting and varied programme of exhibitions, off-site projects and participation events. Our aim is to make the appreciation and creation of art a more inclusive activity.
We have a track record of supporting sensational artists at the embryonic stages of their careers. Artists such as Mona Hatoum, Richard Wilson and Susan Collis, all now internationally-acclaimed, received support from Aspex which helped establish them as household names.
Today, we continue to offer the next generation of contemporary visual artists a platform from which to launch their careers.
Key projects like EMERGENCY, our open submission biennial exhibition, put new work by new artists centre-stage.
Our participation programme, recognised by the arts industry as one of the best in the country, provides activities for everyone from toddlers through to pensioners. There are regular weekly family art workshops including Family Saturdays and Mini- Makers.
Programmes such as Generate, our weekly art sessions for people with dementia, are further proof of our on-going commitment to arts participation and creative education for all.
We also run a thriving shop, which affords local artists and creatives a space to sell their work to an engaged audience.
Our cafe space is home to Port Coffee - an eatery combining the traditions of Portsmouth with Czech influences, supported by local bakery Bread Addiction.
