K&ESR's 50th Birthday celebrations

Did you know that it’s 50 years since the Kent & East Sussex Railway restarted passenger services on the line?

Along with popular favourites such as its 1940s Weekend and double award-winning Santa Specials, its celebratory events programme is packed with special events including not one but two Galas:

A Diesel Gala 12-14 April and a major Anniversary Gala on 1 & 2 June, marking the official 1974 reopening ceremony.

Easter Adventure Quest at Battle Abbey

Join English Heritage at Battle Abbey for a cracking adventure quest this Easter.

Hunt for clues in the grounds, track down Easter eggs for a tasty chocolatey reward.

Take on the quest every day of the school holidays, cost £2 on top of the ticket price, pay on arrival.

Did you know that William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey on the site of the Battle of Hastings?

Step back in time this Easter at Pevensey Castle

Visit Pevensey Castle this Easter for an adventure through time. Founded in the 4th century as one of the last of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts, did you know that Pevensey Castle was also used by William of Normandy’s army in 1066? Much later it was pressed back into service as an emergency stronghold in the Second World War and you can still see machine gun posts camouflaged into the castle walls. Visit the exhibition to discover stories of sieges and royal prisoners. Crack the Pevensey Castle Code, peer into the dungeon and make the most of the wide-open spaces on an adventure in the fresh air.

Bateman's

Bateman's is a historic home that once belonged to renowned author Rudyard Kipling, celebrated for timeless stories like The Jungle Book. The house was built in 1634 and is surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Sussex Weald. It provided a much-needed sanctuary for Kipling and served as an inspiration for his work. You can explore the picturesque garden, visit the working watermill, and treat yourself in our tea-room and shop.

Did you know that Kipling’s “Puck of Pook’s Hill” takes its name from a hill visible from the house, and the setting of Bateman’s and the surrounding local area also feature prominently in many of his stories?

Bodiam Castle

Step into medieval history at Bodiam Castle.

This 14th-century moated castle is in the heart of a historical landscape.

With a ruined interior, spiral staircases, battlements, and a portcullis, this is one of the most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments in Britain.

During your visit to the castle, you can explore the surrounding countryside, grab a bite to eat in the tea-room and find a souvenir in the shop. Fun fact in time for Easter - did you know that Bodiam Castle features in the 2023 feature film, ‘Wonka’, starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Willy Wonka?

Sound Matters at Great Dixter 2024

It’s important to us at Great Dixter, that visitors to our gardens realise the importance of diverse habitats and garden practices which lead to a greater biodiversity. We have collaborated with Sound Matters to produce soundscapes for our visitors to listen to, enabling them to truly connect to the gardens through the simple act of listening. These soundscapes capture the unique sounds of the people, the gardens, the house and wildlife and encourage people to listen to, not just look at, the gardens. Did you know that Great Dixter has three 18th-century oast houses in its grounds?

1066 Country Vineyards

1066 Country has the highest number of sunshine hours in the UK, so no wonder our vineyards produce some of the best English wines in the country.

Did you know that in 2022 Sussex Sparkling Wine was granted official Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status and is providing strong competition for other global fizz on the world stage?

Take a tour of our vineyards or join a day of tastings and lunch among the vines, with transport provided if you’d prefer not to drive.
