Autumn in 1066 Country is filled with colour, light and excitement, with some of our biggest events taking place now. Our vineyards are alive with activity as the harvest to produce award-winning Sussex wines gets underway. Our forests and gardens are on fire with autumn reds and golds and the woods are ripe for foraging in. Fireworks and flames are a feature too of the towns of Hastings, Battle, Rye and Robertsbridge with bonfire season running from October through November. Take a peek here at our beautiful 1066 countryside video. Plus win an overnight break for two people at the Mermaid Inn, Rye! We’ve plenty to shout about this autumn in 1066 Country!

The one and only Battle of Hastings re-enactment this year is on the very anniversary itself. Taking place on the very spot where King Harold and Duke William fought in 1066, don't miss over 300 reenactors as they recreate the drama and intensity of this legendary conflict. Venture into the encampments of the armies on either side of the historic battlefield and get up close and personal with Saxon and Norman soldiers.

Take part in National Walking Month

The Battle of Hastings took place in the countryside where the town of Battle now lies. Named to commemorate the most famous conflict on English soil, this compact market town grew up alongside the 1066 battle site, tranquil medieval abbey and surrounding ancient woodlands, largely unchanged to this day. Join the route of the 1066 Country Walk at Battle, or lose yourself in Battle Great Wood. With direct trains from London Charing Cross and London Bridge, you can be on the battlefield itself in 90 minutes!

The 70th National Town Criers’ Championship comes to its new location of Rye on Saturday 14th October 2023. Join Rye’s own town crier, as he host criers from across the country taking part in this spectacular event, being held in the Gun Gardens in Rye. Judging will be based on volume, diction, clarity and inflection. Round one takes place from 10.30am – 12.30pm, hearing a ‘home cry’ from each participant. The competition continues in the afternoon, from 2pm – 4pm, with a themed cry, after which the results will be announced.

1066 Country has the highest number of sunshine hours in the UK, so no wonder our vineyards produce some of the best English wines in the country. Autumn, when the grapes are at their fattest, is the best time to visit for a tour and tasting. Got a special occasion in mind for a group outing? Book your transport and tour for the day, with collection from your 1066 Country location or arrival railway station, a great idea for a family get together, hen party, big birthday.

While the rest of the country gears up for Guy Fawkes Night on 5th November , the spectacular bonfire season is already well under way by October here in 1066 Country. Hastings Bonfire and Torchlight Procession is on 14th October, followed closely by Battle, Rye and Robertsbridge - one each for the first three November weekends and all free to watch! Travel by train if you can.

Visit our Halloween page as events mysteriously appear over the next few weeks. From the Spooky Travelling Tavern and ghost walks to murder mystery dinners – that’s the adults sorted! Bodiam Castle, Battle Abbey and Drusilla’s Park all offer less scary Halloween experiences for younger ghost busters. Book in to The Mermaid Inn, Rye for 600 years of history and a reputation for ghostly sightings. If you’d rather enjoy the dark nights without the frights, join an evening of stargazing at one of the events taking place between now and December 2023 at The Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux.

We’re not wanting to wish autumn away but Santa’s elves are already busy and our Christmas list of events is starting to grow. Find out here what’s on in the run up to the festive season, with more added as the weeks go by.
